How To Use Simcraft To Get Stat Weights Legion
SIMCRAFT BASICS: How To Use Pawn
What is Pawn?
From the developer: "Pawn calculates scores for items to help you easily find upgrades for your gear. It's completely customizable, and applicable to any class and situation. Pawn can be used by new players right off the bat without needing to change any options, or by advanced players who plan out their gear upgrades, build Excel spreadsheets, and run simulations."
This basic tutorial will show you how to use Pawn alongside Simcraft. When used together, these programs will help make the most of your gear! Pawn is very straightforward and easy to use.
Getting started:
Here's what you need:
- Download the latest version of Simcraft from SimulationCraft.org
- Download and install the in-game Simcraft addon
- Download and install the in-game Simcraft Trinket addon
- Download and install the in-game Pawn addon:

[Step 1]: Importing Strings from Simcraft
First you'll need a current sim of your character. If you don't have one available, create and a run a sim of your character. Simcraft will generate a short code (called a string) for use with Pawn.
Once you have your string, open the Pawn addon in-game by typing /pawn.
The tabs on the bottom of the window are what's important here.
Select the [Scale] tab:
Pawn may default itself to Automatic, but you don't want this. Instead, select the Manual button toward the bottom.
The new list on the left side lets you use premade stat templates for different specs. At the top of the list will be templates applicable to your current class. You can choose to rename the templates or create custom ones using the options on the right, but the most important part of this tab is the Share your scales option.
Remember the Pawn string Simcraft generated for you earlier?
Copy the whole string from your Simcraft results.
Now in-game, click the red Import button on the Scale tab in Pawn. Paste the string in the provided field:
Click Okay. The information is loaded instantly and you will automatically be brought to the [Weight] tab in Pawn:
Pawn has updated its stat weights for your custom spec based on the string you gave it. Since the string is from Simcraft you don't need to change anything, but if you ever wanted tweak anything, just click on the stat and type in an updated number.

[Step 2]: Configuring Pawn
Now open the [Options] tab from the tabs on the bottom of the window.
This is where you can customize the way Pawn shows you information on tooltips. Pawn also has a feature that recommends which gems to socket (more in the [Gems] tab at the bottom).

[Step 3]: Reading Gear Tooltips
Once you're finished, hover your mouse over any gear in your bags on equipped (press and hold Alt while hovering over equipped items to show all slot-specific equippable items in your inventory). You'll see new information at the bottom of your tooltips telling you how much of an upgrade something is based on your best stat weights:
Here it says these legplates are a 1% upgrade over what I'm currently wearing in my ret spec. I also configured Pawn to show me upgrades for my prot spec.
Pawn will show this information on all gear I come across, which makes it easy to tell if something is an upgrade or not. It's very helpful if you have two pieces of gear that are similar but you're not sure which is better.

Using the Compare Tool
In the event you do have similar pieces of gear, Pawn also has a feature that lets you immediately compare their stats side-by-side.
To access this feature, type /pawn and select the [Compare] tab:
Drag and drop those two pieces of gear into the provided boxes. Pawn will take care of the rest:
All stats on both items are compared against each other according to your stat weights from Simcraft.
The left side will always have red text and the right side will always have green text, so be sure to look at which side has the green arrow graphic towards the bottom of the menu as this indicates which item is better.

When should I update my Pawn strings?
Update your Pawn string whenever you update your sims.
Pawn is only useful if you keep your Pawn string updated, which means keeping your sims updated. If your gear changes and your sims recommend a different best stat, you gotta update Pawn or it will keep recommending gear based on your outdated stat weights.

* * DISCLAIMER! * *
Pawn is a very helpful addon, but just like Simcraft, you have to take it with a grain of salt.
For example, Pawn tells me the i900 legplates in my bags are an upgrade for me, but it doesn't adjust for the fact that I'm wearing tier legplates. Although the stats aren't as good on the tier piece, the tier bonus makes it much better than the offset piece in my bags. Pawn doesn't know that.It only recommends upgrades based on raw stats.
